The lyric arose in response to a group-challenge to write something in the style of a songwriter we admire. I chose Jason Isbell. This was my attempt to create a plausible real-life type of story in the raw, down-to-earth way that Isbell does.
I also wanted to touch on the ongoing problem of domestic abuse.

V1
It wasn’t Jesus who kept on the light
Heartsick and waiting for you
He wasn’t the one alone in the cab
The morning our baby was due
V2
It wasn’t Jesus you knocked to the floor
Drove a point home with your boots
He wasn’t the one you left in a heap
His hair you pulled out by the roots
Chorus
So I hear you got religion
You’re living sober now
Hear your new girl’s pregnant
And you’re busy making plans
You walked into the water
Came out a brand new man
V3
It wasn’t Jesus who took all the flak
When you needed somebody to blame
He wasn’t the one who learned how to fear
The shape of your mood when it changed
Chorus
So I hear you got religion
You’re living sober now
Hear your new girl’s pregnant
And you’re busy making plans
You walked into the water
Came out a brand new man
Bridge
Oh, I don’t begrudge your peace of mind
...But now that you’ve been forgiven
By someone you can’t see
What’s keeping you from giving
An apology to me?
Chorus
So I hear you got religion
You’re living sober now
Hear your new girl’s pregnant
And you’re busy making plans
You walked into the water
Came out a brand new man
