The narrator meets his friend (Old Henry) at the docks as the sun is fading. Old Henry then unfolds a story of adultery and murder, for which he is now being hunted.
Met Old Henry at the docks that night
He's waiting there in the waning light
He said "my friend, just where have you been?
And what have you seen?"
I said "I've been down, on down the road
Seen faces so hot, thought they might explode.
And I don't know what you did do
But I heard them say they were lookin' for you."
He said "my friend you know I could not lie
Ain't no use now even if I tried.
I went down to the old sheriff's house
and I saw Miss Annie in her pretty blue blouse.

"Well around 7:30 we were feelin' good and dirty
mmmhmm
The Sheriff busted through the door and seen us lyin' on the floor
mmhmm

"Well he reached for the shotgun that was hangin' on the shelf
Shot poor little Miss Annie in her side.
I pulled my pistol from its holster and I fired one off myself,
Then I watched as the life in both them died."

I said, "now Henry, you know you'd better run.
You'll surely hang for the deed you've done."
He said, "my friend, don't you think that I know?
Now you didn't see me here." And he turned to go.
I said, "now wait a minute Henry." Callin' over his shoulder
"Did you kiss your baby girl goodbye? Did you even hold her?
Now the way that I figure, with that price on your head,
I could use that money and anyway you're better off dead."

Well he turned with eyes a glarin' like he'd seen the devil starin'
mmhmm
No he didn't make a sound, dropped his bag onto the ground
mmhmm

He reached like lightnin' for his hip but it did him no good
Shot my friend Old Henry in his eye
He blinked twice with the other til his body hit the wood
Then I stood and watched the life inside him die x
