A plea to fix our public discourse
Music, lyrics, guitar and vocals by Eric Steffensen on a single mic recorded on a cellphone :)

I'm becoming more concerned each day with how social media has made us more divided and more isolated. This song is a plea to people of all different political persuasions and worldviews to be more conscientious about the tone. Our democracy and dare I say the future of humanity depends on it.

Brandon spends all day
Obsessed with Twitter's daily fray
Perfects new insults for his foes
Convinced he can destroy their certainty
Gets his soundbyte fix
Sparring over politics
Feels satisfied with each new barb
But wonders why he's trapped in isolation
If we can land a man on the moon
Send a probe to see Neptune
Why can't we make ourselves immune to hate's agenda
One day man could go to the stars
Light-years beyond Mars
But we'll fail if vitriol devours our dignity
I had a dream
People from all different creeds
Marched arm in arm and hand in hand
Singing a prayer to peace and understanding
If we can land a man on the moon
Send a probe to see Neptune
Why can't we make ourselves immune to hate's agenda
One day man could go to the stars
Light-years beyond Mars
But we'll fail if vitriol devours our dignity
The world can't change without debate
Don't let your passions drift away
All that I'm really trying to say
Is we've forgotten empathy
If we can land a man on the moon
Send a probe to see Neptune
Why can't we make ourselves immune to hate's agenda
One day man could go to the stars
Light-years beyond Mars
But we'll fail if vitriol devolves our dignity
If we can map the human genome
Get directions from our phones
Why can't we soften up the tone of public discourse?
