I was driving with a friend of mine and we had just missed the turn we needed to take when my friend commented, "wow, we were really in the wrong lane, three lanes over." I immediately wanted to right a song about missing out on something due to timing, lack of experience, etc. and how it feels to be let down.

I drive all day
But the road never seems the same
Seen trucks piled up
And the broken lives of those who’ve lost
But that don’t change
The cargo I haul or the mortgage I pay
I can’t change what I’ve seen
But I’m the man – I want to be
Man I feel
Like I’m in the third lane over
My view is skewed
Drivin in the third lane over
Livin in the third lane over…
It’s come and gone
Any trust I had in what you say
And it don’t seem real
All the burdens I’m made to shoulder
Still you look my way
To deliver on all the things you’ve said
I can’t change what I’ve seen
But I’m the man – I want to be
Man I feel
Like I’m in the third lane over
My view is skewed
Drivin in the third lane over
Man I feel
Like I’m in the third lane over
My view is skewed
Drivin in the third lane over
Livin in the third lane over…
Livin in the third lane over…
