The song tells the story of a person who starts to question their life after their father dies, aand comes to the conclusion that the only thing to do is move away and take a chance some where else, even though this means leaving behind their mother.

cupboard grows bearer day by day
look in my eyes, nothing to say
times got hard when pa passed away
nothing but a memory
and ma she cries her self to sleep
through the cracks in the wall I hear her weep
go to the abbey fall down on my knees
pray to god to watch over me
as I walk through the garden I walk past the trees
winter wind cuts right through me
go to where my relatives lay
hope that they'll come speak to me
I pray that they'll come speak to me
we've been through these times before
breathed this air and walked these shores
somewhere beyond the horizon does glow
a place that I can call a home
and days go by wihtout a trace
packed my belongings in daddy's suitcase
kiss ma on the cheek before I part
keep a picture of her close to my heart
I try not to cry as I depart
walk down the hill like I've done before
lie through my teeth just to get through the door
bag on my back I go on my way
maybe I'll return someday yeah
maybe I'll be back one day
