Promises
copyright 2000 words and music Jim Walsh
Looking for a shortcut back to heaven
Annie took the next bus into town
She scored herself a bag or two of promise
Then slipped into the underground
She didn't have the money to get back home
But is was a warm night in the park
She watched the moon dancing on the water
And thanked God for the dark
She knew him one time in his trailer
She knew him another time in his car
She didn't know him well enough for promises
And that's just the way things are
Annie felt too young to face these choices
But she knew which choice she had to make
She had no way to raise a baby
She skips a rock across the lake
Chorus:
But if she tries with all her might
Maybe she could stop the morning light
She wouldn't care about wrong or right
If it would only stay
Forever night
Annie wonders how she'll face her parents
Would she ever tell them what she did
Everbody breaks their share of promises
And after all she's just a kid
The rock goes hopping across the surface
Maybe it'd be better if she drowned
If she only had the courage
She'd let the water drag her down
Repeat chorus and out
