A SOLDIER’S LAMENT
I came over here
Bright eyed with no fear
A lust for adventure in my heart
When I think to way back when
And to what I was thinking then
I must have been out of my mind
I’m just here waiting
Hoping I don’t die young
Charging, retreating
Hoping I don’t die young
I don’t kill for a rise
Just to survive
And the Lord have mercy on my soul
I’ve seen so many cry
And I’ve watched so many die
And I don’t even know why
I’m just here waiting
Hoping I don’t die young
Ducking and strafing
Hoping I don’t die young
And my dreams always roam
To what I left at home
And they get me through another night
You who scheme and who ruse
If you think I’m fighting for you
You must be out of your mind
I’m just here waiting
Hoping I don’t die….
