Walk in the shade of the big maple trees
Lining the path on the free city green
Bell of the distant tower
And smell of the rosy flower
And everything in between touches me
But I’ve no one to tell now
As I lie on the grass how
The life and shapes and colors so attuned
Leaf on the bridge passing over the creek
Sat there so still, so content, and so neat
Then a gust of wind kicked up
Everything went a-spinning my
Leaf fell in the creek and swept away
I’m happy for my friends
But I thought it would never end
The water looks so cold and quick from here
I’d been there sometime ago
Not that there is much I can recall
I thought I’d grown but this scene
Takes me back to all the same
Baffling questions of my youth
Child running past holding fast to her kite
Mother and father, they watch with delight
Was it really easier when you and I were younger
And the only love we knew created us?
Will it be the same when we bore of playing games
And we pass on fascination to our kids?
