In Richmond, Virginia there is an Avenue of Monuments to the great Southern Generals of The Civil War and to Jefferson Davis, the President of The Confederacy. There is also a grave for the unknown soldiers.
|
lay your flowers gently on
this place i now call home
like pharoah in his pyramid
that is my marker stone
there are no colours anywhere
no victors wearing blue
nor vanquished in there butternut
mere roots where flowers grew
set fire to the city, boys
the bridges and the guns
leave it raging like our hearts
burn for our lost sons
and all along the avenues
the sculptors left their mark
visions of those mighty men
in times so grave and dark
set fire to the city, boys
the bridges and the guns
leave it raging like our hearts
burn for our lost sons
Jeff'son Davis where have you gone
Nowhere left to run
Richmond is now calling home
her favorite wayward son
and all along the avenues
the sculptors left their mark
in visions of those mighty men
in times so grave and dark
all along the avenues
the sculptors left their mark
these statues yield a promised light
shield us from the dark
jeb and lee and ol' stonewall
are standing at the mouth
tears like rain are glistening
as night comes for the south
