In loving memory of Deborah Ellis, 1967-1991. Her poetry to music

Deborah Ellis and Cary Kembla

We And They

From the safe spot on my hospital bed
I take a look at where they and we stand
My gaze settles on them, all I see is spite and hate
And this I cannot live with
I can see that it drowns them
And we who hold a hand of help
We go with them
They swim strongly as do we
But they swim with the tide
We swim against it
And we who hold a hand of help
Go with them
As the sun comes up each morning
I sort through my emotions one by one
Hoping that I may once again grasp some notion
Of who I was or who I am
I know I have those who love me
I know that I’m important and unique
I know that I should come alive
But all I see is darkness and despair
They swim strongly as do we
But they swim with the tide
We swim against it
And we who hold a hand of help
Go with them
