Martin Concannon

Story of own musical tastes and desires
But I Didn’t Make It

I read a book bout Jerry Lee, sang Elvis Presley songs
I dreamt of being a Buddy Holly or Fats Domino
I tried to copy Jim Reeves , even sang “He’ll Have to Go”
I did my best and got played on local radio.

Back in ‘73 when I played in the Cottonfields
Sang Haggard & Charlie Pride & dreamed of crystal chandeliers
If I came from New Orleans, I might have sang the Blues
And maybe even met my idol, The great Jerry Lee Lewis.

But I Didnt make it..... I didnt make it!
O Didn’t make it….. I Didn’t make it

When I first heard Chuck Berry I was only two years old
I rattled in my pram & screamed & screamed for more
Even though my daddy was a lovin’ man, I knew he couldnt understand
I was born to play in a band.

The Everlys were great , saw them one night in ‘68
I thought one day I’ll go far, came home and bought my first guitar
I got three chord tricks and learned some great licks
I’m still playin’ and doin’ my best, an well past my sell-by-date.

But I Didnt make it..... I didnt make it!
No I Didn’t make it… .. I Didn’t make it

Bill Haley made me rock ‘n roll, just to hear him churned my soul
I tried to emulate his style, all that practice seemed worthwhile
Jim Croce sang ‘Leroy Brown’ when I played in every town
I sang that song as best I could , could never beat Mick Cuffe.

Those were the days , I thought I could be … Chuck Berry or Ge rry Lee
Thought I could be …..Chuck Berry or Gerry Lee
