Tiny Island
©William Brooks 2015
I grew up on this tiny island
Me and this mighty giant.
No other lands you could see
The giant said the waters deep
Were full of monsters that never sleep
And, Oh, what a feast they'd make of me
The giant saw I was always fed
Always warm, nice clean bed
I had to do was shine a smile
He even gave me a wonderous box
With a golden key and 13 locks
I buried it down deeper than a mile
Something less than paradise
It can look real nice
For something less than paradise
And something less than paradise
Comes at quite a price
For something less than paradise
Late one night I heard a weeping
So sad and loud it broke my sleeping
I followed it deep into the giant's cave
I knew I better fix this quick
A little song and dance might do the trick
Before I drown in the next teary wave
Sure enough I was a hit
He laughed all though the monkey skit
I stood proud in the palm of his hand
But show time turned up everyday
Another song, a brand new play
Come night I'd just collapse in the sand
Something less than paradise
It can look real nice
For something less than paradise
And something less than paradise
Comes at quite a price
For something less than paradise
Then one day the giant fell
He never got up, never got well
I could only sit and beg and plea
It took three days to dig the hole
And giants, man, they're hard to roll
I wiped my hands and stared out at the sea
Someday soon I'm gonna build a boat
Get off this rock and buy a coat
But what I'd really like to learn to cuss
I'm gonna dig me up that stupid box
Crack it open with a big fat rock
And finally get see what's all the fuss.
Something less than paradise
It can look real nice
For something less than paradise
And something less than paradise
Comes at quite a price
For something less than paradise
