The song is of a wounded American war hero and of the love and support promised to him after he was injured.

I saw the tears as they rolled down her cheeks.
She stretched out her hands but didn’t speak.
Who was she? I couldn’t remember.
But I didn’t want to offender her.
She walked over and kissed my cheek.
She wasn’t shy but I felt weak.
I had bandages on my head.
And this is what she said.
Red, white and blue, that you defend.
Star spangled banner I’m your friend.
I’ll stand by you, ‘til the end.
Because you’re my champion.
American hero, I love you.
Though they say you’ve lost a limb or two.
You may have challenges at home.
But you don’t have to face them alone.
I wanted to turn away, right then.
But I wanted her to visit again.
The blast was echoing in my head.
And I wondered why I wasn’t dead.
