A true story about a girl who lost her fire fighter father in the course of his duties and how those memories can haunt her

After September 11th there were a lot of memorial services for fire fighters who had been killed at ground zero. A friend of mine at junior school had lost her father when he went on a routine fire fighting job. After the papers reported his death, no one remembered him. So I wondered how Katie felt watching the memorials for the heroes of the New York Fire Department. This is a true story, by the way.

Katie’s dad was a fireman but one day he went missing, inside a fallen building he was trapped
In his time he saved some lives and everyone remembers until the burning embers turn to ash
And I mean no disrespect to those we praise as heroes,
When the room goes quiet, I wonder how Katie feels
Katie was a child back then, six, maybe seven, but she knew that heaven is where spacemen play
And her tears they never came, she never gave up hoping, although her heart was broken on that day
And I mean no disrespect to those we praise as heroes
When the room goes quiet, I wonder how Katie feels
Katie had her toys but they were no replacement
And she knew what that look meant in her mother’s eyes
And I mean no disrespect to those we praise as heroes
When the room goes quiet, I wonder how Katie feels
