For the ex-soldiers on our streets whom our governments abandon when they have no further use for them.
|
Well I am the one they call Jimmy - I live in perpetual fear.
I'm a drunk - I'm a bum - but I'm better than some of the men who put me here.
I live on the road where they left me.
And I sleep on the streets where I fall.
And while I'm grateful to they who throw pennies my way ...
I'd prefer they threw nothing at all.
So just let me drink - then let me sleep
I don't want to think about things that will keep me awake at night.
Just let me be - you don't want to see inside the mind of a drowning man.
Well I served my Queen and my country - as many have done before
I was scared - I was young - I was dumb as they come.
My God - the things that I saw.
The devil delights in the details - and the angels just don't want to know.
Why this man of the streets feeds the jaws of defeat ...
And they will not let me go.
So just let me drink - then let me sleep
I don't want to think about things that will keep me awake at night.
Just let me be - you don't want to see inside the mind of a drowning man.
Oh hope - oh glory - wherever can you be?
I am aware there are some whom no cannon stuns ...
But they stunned me.
They say every drink tells a story - and from every tear hangs a tale
But if you don't mind - I am mostly inclined to keep them to myself.
So just let me drink - then let me sleep
I don't want to think about things that will keep me awake at night.
Just let me be - you don't want to see inside the mind of a drowning man.
