Sammy's Salvation
Words and music copyright 2008 by Steve Swellander
Sammy woke from darker dreams,
He said he'd seen the light.
Blessed Jesus stood by him,
stationed to his right.
We believed him when he said
That he had been reborn,
God had gifted him with voice
To spread the joyous word.
Sammy raised his hands to heaven
Cast his darker past behind,
Exhorted us to walk with him
Into the grace of holy light.
O Sammy, take us home
To the land of milk and honey
Show us to a promised land
Along the straight and narrow road.
We entreated the uncounted ones
To join a mighty tabernacle.
Collected from the poor in soul
And built these splendid walls.
Within we raised our hands
cast the darkness behind,
we passed the plate of plenty
and sang the joyous rhymes.
Sammy points his finger to God
“Cast your darkness and sin behind!
Come my children, walk with me,
Into the grace of our holy light!
Let Sammy take you home
To wonders you can't conceive,
I will render to you God's promises
And save those who believe!”
His tabernacle rose to glory
and pierced the clouds above
but Sammy grew strangely ill
and his darker dreams returned.
He coveted the plate of plenty
and broadcast calls for more.
His voice reached across the planet
His plate grew great in store.
Sammy lay down to sleep one night,
He never woke again,
He wasn't found till Sunday
And his flock fell in disarray.
The church tumbled like Jericho
People left to find their ways.
Sammy sleeps still in his grave
His dark dreams have finally slipped away.
