We grew up in a river town
there used to be a lot of fields
then we dug all the spruce out
and everything seemed so unreal
we put up a bunch of telephone lines
and put sewage pipes in the ground
and we sprayed all the meadow weeds
and we drained all the marsh ponds
and we tore all the bur oak down
and we tore all the cattails down
and we tore all the switch grass down
and we tore all the milkweed down
and then we tore all the sumac down
and then we tore all the sumac down
We grew up in a river town
there used to be a lots of fields
stars there were abound
now there's street lights for all the wheels
and we built a bunch of strip malls
and all the salamanders disappeared
and we put new houses down
it all seemed kinda weird
and we they tore all the bur oak down
and we tore all the cattails down
and we tore all the switchgrass down
and we tore all the milkweed down
and then we tore all the sumac down....
and then we tore all the sumac down...
for some of us progress
is code word for memories
for some of us development
means to forget
