Two days after her triumphant appearance at Tanglewood, the 14-year-old Japanese violinist Midori returned to her home in New York. Everything had changed. Now there were interviews to give, phone calls to return, photographers and news cameramen flocking outside the door, waiting for a glimpse of the young prodigy.
On Saturday night, Midori played Leonard Bernstein's Serenade for Violin and String Orchestra at Tanglewood, under the composer's direction, in a performance that John Rockwell of The New York Times called ''technically near-perfect.'' In the fifth movement, Midori broke a string. Unfazed, she borrowed the concertmaster's violin and continued playing. Another string broke, she borrowed the acting associate concertmaster's violin and kept on. ''When it was over, audience, orchestra and conductor-composer joined in giving her a cheering, stomping, whistling ovation,'' Mr. Rockwell observed...
