A lilting tribute to midwestern roots

He
In the early morning sunlight,
he
lifts up his face
to the eastern direction
and prays for forgiveness
to the western direction
acknowledges his past
and in the present
wonders
can I make it last
He
was a good man
living life for the land
He
was a poor man
living life by the hand
with stretched out figures
of black and white
dotting across
the prairie tonight
The house of the holy
cannot be made with brick or stone
and I’ve hidden with shame
and it’s my only name,
I’ve longed for forgiveness so that
I may move on,
my body’s resistant,
but my soul cannot be contained
I
am ready to go
return my body
to the land
I’ve
heard the call
waking life understand
With stretched out figures
of black and white
dotting across
the prairie tonight
