Margaret Knowles Shellfeather had a dream she shared with me - and we turned it into a song.

PROMISE TO THE GRANDFATHERS
The Grandfathers came to me last night
as I slept a troubled sleep
and even tho i felt so lost
they found me in the deep
I wish you could have heard the words
they whispered in my ear
do not give yourself to one
who does not hold you dear
I had to make a promise
to the keepers of my soul
I'd give myself to no man
unless I could be whole
They spoke with gentle clarity
to a sweetly beating drum
making certain I would know
what needed to be done
I had to make a promise
to the keepers of my soul
I'd give myself to no man
unless I could be whole
and I must keep that promise
for my life is in their hands
so I cut you loose
and I walk my path
you need not understand
The Grandfathers came to me last night
and found me while i slept
and when i woke i knew at once
my promise will be kept
i will make sure it is kept
