A tribute to Townes Van Zandt. Many thanks to JP Sharpe for helping me tweak the lyrics and for being kind enough to perform this song!!!!

I have been a Townes Van Zandt fan sice I first saw him when I was in college. I have listened to and played his music for a long time. I wrote this song after reading the book To Live's To Fly, which is a biography of Townes written by John Kruth. Townes left us much to soon and left many songs unsung. If you know anything about Townes you know that he wrestled with many demons throughout his life.
This song is performed by JP Sharpe. He is also a Townes fan and as I was writing this song it was his voice I heard singing it. He was nice enough to help me tweak the lyrics and to then record it for me. His participation has made this song more than it would have been otherwise and I thank him for that. I promised my wife I would let people know that she chose the title after hearing the song so this has been a collaboration all around!!!

Unsung
Jeff Lustick 2009
The morning sun has yet to shine
As if your hands could turn back time
And there you stand singing your songs
The days don't seem so far away
Like it was only yesterday
When your voice made me feel I belonged
Your words were sometimes frightening
Honest and enlightening
To me
Those Texas winds blow hot and dry
And underneath that southern sky
Your never ending search had begun
Sometimes dreams get turned around
But there's more to life than waitin' round to die
For songs that went unsung
Memories can disappear
Leaving emptiness and fear
Inside
Among the ones you left behind
A daughter and a son
Your words still echo in their minds
Now that you are gone
Demons often hide within
Disguised as the best of friends
Their goal to lead your soul astray
We all have different roads to choose
Battles we must win or lose
You live to sing another day
Your words were sometimes frightening
Honest and enlightening
To me
Sometimes dreams get turned around
But there's more to life than waitin' round to die
For songs that went unsung
