Ballad of the Bard © 2007-2009 by E. Shasta Bates

1. As we tuned into America - Dorothy was asleep -

The Big Bad Wolf was on the loose - in a field of dreaming sheep -

Scarecrow reporters - they babbled the mundane -

The Tinman he was rusting from -his tears that fell like rain -

Well, you think the Lion’s brave - but there’s a Monkey on his back -

The Man you thought would be your king - really don't know Jack -

Yeah, you marvel at the Wizard - running your machine -

And pray to the gods you’ll awake one day - to find it’s just a dream -

(Refrain)

Perhaps in another place in time the surroundings weren’t so hard -

Back when they would listen to the ballad - ballad of the Bard

2. Now, big black triangles with laser cannon - floatin' in toxic skies -

Overhead mile oblong platforms - make you wanna run and hide -

Oh, the air force doesn’t know a thing - the government is mute -

Maybe we’re just ruled by - reptilians in suits -

Now the only thing left to hope for - is the time to drink the wine -

Genetic harvesting is goin’ down - across the county line -

Oh, they fill you up with implants - those nasty little grays -

And just like animal mutilations - you wish they’de go away -

(Refrain)

Circles separate wheat from chaff - out in my backyard -

It's just another day in the life in the ballad - ballad of the Bard -

3. Riding in a caravan - upon a humpback camel -

Ali the Sheik was dressed in sheets - and a turban made of flannel -

Ol’ Ali Baba’s wife - she had 40 Thieves -

But, to get them in her tent that night - she had to make each one so brief -

Then big ol’ Baba he showed up - she thought she was all done -

But he knelt right down and kissed her hand - while worshiping the sun -

Little Egypt, said I’m sorry - old Ali said, “Me too!” -

And they both had their fill of Forbidden Fruit - until the morning dew -

(Refrain)

Well, I rode up to the pyramids - the Sphinx she was on guard -

But I’d get through with the answers to the riddle - riddle of the Bard -

4. Oh, Xena was my heroin - I didn’t need no drug -

If I wanted to fly, I would try - by sitting on my rug -

Yeah, I grew up in Disneyland - Lassie by my side -

I searched for Sleeping Beauty - but all I got was jive -

I used to believe in Santa Claus & the Playboy Bunny too -

Stars & cards, men from Mars - Oh, some may still come true -

I searched for Long John’s Silver - in my mind I did set sail -

But, the only treasure I found were the words - to tell this crazy tale -

(Refrain)

Now, charging through my dreams - for you with these wise words I depart -

Are they just dumb rhymes without no reason - in the ballad of the Bard? -

Charging through my dreams - for you with these wise words I depart -

Are they just a tall tales without purpose in the ballad of the Bard? - x
