A profound and penetrating reflection of the troubling times we face during current worsening and worrisome events, encapsulating the unraveling of the threads of democracy.

What in the world is the world coming to
When the people you trust just won’t tell you the truth
How can so many people believe so many lies
Spread by those from behind a disguise

They only tell you what they want you to hear
They’re not what they seem or what you believe
They’ll paint you a picture they want you to see
And when you peel back the paint you’ll see that you’ve been deceived

What in the world is the world coming to
An uncertain future and a past that is hard to defend
What a sorrowful state we find ourselves in
Will we ever see life close to normal again?

They know your weakness that you just want more and more
They fill your head with false hope and promises galore
Just give them your vote they preach and implore
And they promise they’ll give you the keys to the store

You’ll stand in line for hours just to get to the door
Just to find the place empty, four walls and a floor
You’ll find you were sold a pig in a poke
Bare-faced lies that you bought with your vote

We have the right to peaceful protest and to take a knee
Not to see one used to hear a black man cry out, Mama, I can’t breathe
We stand for justice and we stand for peace
Not for vigilante thugs and armed commandos in the streets

What in the world is the world coming to
An uncertain future and a past that is hard to defend
What a sorrowful state we find ourselves in
Will we ever see life close to normal again?

We had so much promise not all that long ago
Politicians told us just what they wanted us to know
The future looked so bright we were led to believe
Little did we know the plans they had up their sleeves

Little did we know that so many harboured hate
That they believed that theirs was the chosen race
And that they believed black and brown was less than white
So pray tell how do two wrongs make them right?

What in the world is the world coming to
An uncertain future and a past that is hard to defend
What a sorrowful state we find ourselves in
Will we ever see life close to normal again?

The world and democracies torn apart at the seams
By greed, hate and violence and fake conspiracies
Hope, dreams and plans all crashed and burned
By a pandemic virus that has swallowed the world

Surely all this madness will soon come to an end
And that truth and respect and common sense will win
And that all the haters can be brought to their knees
Not to hear someone cry out, I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe

What in the world is the world coming to
An uncertain future and a past that is hard to defend
What a sorrowful state we find ourselves in
Will we ever see life close to normal again?

WATERS EDGE
Like the beat, like the rap, Neil's broad sensibility turns to society's zeitgeist, a bold poetical statement, cultural kudos..
