My friend Harry Hamm and I often wrote together. We both loved John Prine and his songs. We decided to see if we could write a John Prine - like song. "Beside Myself" is the result.

When I wake up beside myself I can’t make up my mind
If I should stay in bed with me or leave myself behind
On second thought I better go it’s pretty plain to see
I’ll always be beside myself until I’m rid of me
Sometimes when I’m beside myself I don’t know what to do
It seems it’s always twice as hard to have to think for two
Sometimes I think I shouldn’t and times I think I should
I’m almost sure I wouldn’t even if I could
There’s days when I get sideways and days when I get straight
There’s days I’m undecided and others when I ain’t
There’s times I get forgetful and think I’m someone else
But I’m always lookin’ twice as good as when I’m beside myself
Next spring when I’m beside myself on how much tax to pay
I’ll drive my sidecar motorbike to see my C.P.A.
He’ll double my deductions to get the right amount
I’ll get a couple refund checks for my new joint account
Sitting here beside myself I gave my girl a call
She didn’t think the three of us would get along at all
I found a pair of Siamese twins who like to stay up late
And me and me and her and her went on a double date
There’s days when I get sideways and days when I get straight
There’s days I’m undecided and others when I ain’t
There’s times I get forgetful and think I’m someone else
But I’m always lookin’ twice as good as when I’m beside myself
