The horse in the photograph is the late, great 'Ruffian'. She was the greatest filly to date and died in the match race with 'Foolish Pleasure.' She galloped so hard that she splintered her sesamoid bones and kept galloping on her broken leg. Ruffian who was called 'Sophie' by her handlers, won every race except for the last one - the race that killed her. I remember watching the race at Belmont with my Dad and have never been able to watch a race since. That was a long time ago.
Ruffian is buried at Belmont Park in the infield with her nose pointed to the winner's circle where she was headed...
