Looking back at better times and looking ahead to disaster

TOUGH’S NOT ENOUGH
Once upon a time,
Dad brought home the bacon.
Once upon a time,
Mom was there to make it.
Six kids, one car (Detroit made),
Lots of trips to the lake.
Bought a soda pop and some stick pretzels
And got change back from your dime.
Ford was busy making Edsels,
And our towns were free of crime;
But that was so long ago, Gretel,
Once upon a time.
Now, Dad has two jobs or maybe three,
And Mom’s out there working too.
They’ve got four hungry mouths to feed
And two SUVs that thirst for fuel.
The penny’s an endangered species too -
And so is quality family time.
We’ve gone from millionaire island fantasies
Back to “Buddy, can you spare a dime?”
You thought that was so long ago, Hansel,
Once upon a time.
When the going got tough,
Became a real chore,
The tough got going;
Picked themselves up off the floor.
When the going got tough,
Became a real chore,
The tough got going;
They fought and won a war.
Now, it’s tough knowing
We’ve drifted too far from shore.
No idea where we’re going;
No one’s back there minding the store,
And tough just isn’t enough,
Tough’s not enough,
Tough just isn’t enough.
It’s not enough anymore.
Now, the stock market’s lost and looking for crumbs,
And war casualties are at record highs.
Home prices have hit rock bottom;
Unemployment’s on the rise.
It feels like summer in autumn;
We’re in for a polar ice cap surprise.
Hate crimes, drugs, and vicious gangs
Run wild in all the world’s towns.
For every evil man who hangs,
Four more start hanging around.
When the going got tough,
Became a real chore,
The tough got going;
Picked themselves up off the floor.
When the going got tough,
Became a real chore,
The tough got going;
They fought and won a war.
Now, it’s tough knowing
We’ve drifted too far from shore.
No idea where we’re going;
No one’s back there minding the store,
And tough just isn’t enough,
Tough’s not enough,
Tough just isn’t enough.
It’s not enough anymore.
Pretty soon, they’ll be pricing
Gasoline by the quart.
Bread lines will be long;
Patience will be short.
When the going got tough,
Became a real chore,
The tough got going;
Picked themselves up off the floor.
When the going got tough,
Became a real chore,
The tough got going;
They fought and won a war.
Now, it’s tough knowing
We’ve drifted too far from shore,
And no amount of rowing
Is worthy of an encore.
And tough just isn’t enough,
Tough’s not enough,
Tough just isn’t enough.
It’s not enough anymore.
