CHECKOUT TIME
Late last night you checked into your mind,
You were looking for a room with a view.
The waiter and the desk clerk helped you to find
The woman who took the very last room from you.
Never the pupil, always the teacher;
Never in the pews, always the preacher;
Your long arms are your best feature.
You can stretch into forever,
But you still can’t reach her.
You find yourself rapping at her door,
She hears a sound - someone gently tapping,
Ever so slowly, she slides across the floor
Searching for the someone who disturbed her napping.
“Tis some visitor,” she mutters,
As she jerks the door ajar.
Then she visibly shudders,
When she sees just who you are.
Never the pupil, always the teacher;
Never in the pews, always the preacher;
Your long arms are your best feature.
You can stretch into forever,
But you still can’t reach her.
She stands across the doorway and across time;
So close she could crawl inside your skin, it seems.
She curses you for committing a love crime.
This is so much worse than your thinnest of dreams.
You’re never too old to learn that
Lost loves should never return
To old hearts that no longer yearn,
Old flames that no longer burn
With the uncaged heat of concern.
You’re never too old to learn.
Never the pupil, always the teacher;
Never in the pews, always the preacher;
Your long arms are your best feature.
You can stretch into forever,
But you still can’t reach her.
