You can never padlock a man's mind
|
FREE
Lord, they took another day from me;
I’m one day closer to being free.
I didn’t commit that awful crime;
Yet, I’m still sitting here doing time.
These walls sure feel like they’re closing in.
All my memories are growing thin.
I meant it when I entered my plea;
I’m one hundred per cent NOT GUILTY.
I’m doing time and time’s doing me;
Today just might be eternity.
Don’t need any calendars or clocks;
Gotta keep thinking outside this box.
Trapped in this cage,
Can’t turn the page;
This quiet rage
Is killing me.
Without a doubt,
When I get out,
I’ll raise a shout:
“I’ve always been FREE!”
Oh, you can lock a man behind bars,
And feel safer out there where you are,
But the man who did this awful deed
Is out there laughing at you and me.
The echoes in the night are the worst,
Repeating, repeating, “You are CURSED.”
There is no beginning, no week end;
Don’t think I’ll break, but I sure do bend.
Lock the door and throw away the key;
Take everything – my whole life – from me.
Look beyond the shackles and you’ll find
You can never padlock a man’s mind.
You’re out there,
And I’m in here.
It’s the same, I swear,
Year after year.
Trapped in this cage,
Can’t turn the page,
This quiet rage
Is killing me.
Without a doubt,
When I get out,
I’ll raise a shout:
“I’ve always been FREE!”
