Seacliff was built on unstable land and the whole establishment was slowly slipping towards the sea. It is thought this may have caused an electrical short circuit, which in turn caused the file in the wooden building of Ward 5 The Womens ward known as Simla.
The hospital was doomed from the start with many saying it should not have been built there, even before work started but it was many miles from the city of Dunedin and best accessed by train which is how most arrived there, many of whom in 1942 may well have been suffering PMT or perhaps bi-polar.
