LIQUID VISION

SHE WAS PRETTY
In the garden of innocence she loved to stay
Whiling the hours away happy in play
Ripples of laughter echoed her joy
In the moment she cherished her days
As the years tumbled by she continued to grow
A dark cloud arose on the horizon
The bloom of her youth she mistook for her soul
Blind to the essence that shone
Her beauty was marvelled by all that she knew
But a slow disaffection continued to brew
Not content with the image that lay in the glass
Her mind became slowly more restless
She used to believe she was pretty
And her confidence carried her through
But now she relies on deception
The stitches that smother her truth
She used to look into the mirror
And see prisms of shimmering light
But a veil fluttered down through the ether
Eclipsing the glow from her heart
Why could she not leave her poor body alone
Why could she not bask in the light of her soul
Her spouse is long gone he needed to stray
Her efforts decline into desperate decay
Now the scars so affected are eating away
At what little esteem still remains
Her skin is pulled back in a grimace of pain
Not a trace of the girl who once danced in the rain
She clings onto the shards as she brushes her hair
Frayed and brittle the strands that endure
She used to believe she was pretty
And her confidence carried her through
But now she relies on deception
The stitches that smother her truth
She used to look into the mirror
And see prisms of shimmering light
But a veil fluttered down through the ether
Eclipsing the glow from her heart
