The Document Dudes
(The Power of the Pen)

We’re gonna find out about some great men,
The documents they wrote with paper and pen,
Religious freedom by Thomas Jefferson
And the Declaration, wait, I’m not done
James Madison and the Constitution
Bill of Rights by George Mason
James Monroe feelin’ good with his doctrine
The dudes wrote documents, power of the pen!

In the new world if you wanna make a trade,
Or you want a piece of land or a service to be made,
You better get a charter from the almighty king,
It’s a formal, legal document – now listen to me sing!

Chorus

We needed separation from an English king,
To start our own country and let freedom ring
Asking Thomas Jefferson made good sense
And he wrote our Declaration of Independence!
The Statute of Religious Freedom – Thanks T.J.
We worship if we want and in our own way
The Freedom Man’s pen, gave us – can you guess?
Life, liberty, pursuit of happiness!

Chorus

James Madison was short when he would stand,
But what he did was tall, the Mighty Man with a Plan!
He helped write our country’s constitution,
To see there was fairness in how our country’s run
Written and completed on September 1-7
Back in the day 17-87
Formally adopted in Philly P-A
And later ratified by the 13 states!
In 1808 became president
The man with the plan had the power of the pen!

Chorus

George Mason, can you place him? Yeah, he’s the Rights Man!
He knew that the people had to take a stand
He knew that we had to change a few things
Or the government’s power would be like England’s king
Too much power and we wouldn’t be free
The people need some power – not a monarchy!

He proved, once again, that the pen has “might”!
And wrote out the Virginia Declaration of Rights!
Freedoms U.S. citizens all would need,
Led to the Bill of Rights and democracy!
Go to church where we want, we have freedom of speech,
We can vote for our government, keep it in reach!
In 1791 with Amendments 1 through 10,
The Bill of Rights was ratified for the Constitution
Our rights are protected thanks to George Mason,
Another example of the power of the pen!

Chorus

OK, here’s another president you should know,
The Land Protection Man named James Monroe,
You might find him rollin’ up into your hood,
Given all these speeches makin’ people feel good,
A powerful man with a pen in his hand
Writing to protect American land
Persuasion in his writing, he thought it was a cinch
Louisiana Purchase, buyin' land from the French

Now listen to these rhymes comin' from my mouth
The French and the Spanish wanted land to the south,
In Latin America, they wanted to possess
If they did, Monroe thought, they might want us next!
Gotta keep 'em out of there, so in 1823,
He told Congress BEWARE! And listen to me!
The America’s are off limits, put a plan in motion,
So European people, stay on your side of the ocean!
Well they called this document the Monroe Doctrine
Another example of the power of the pen!

Chorus

Mason, Madison, Jefferson and a guy called Monroe
4 famous guys that we all should know
The king and his charters, all powerful and shrewd,
Writing got them what they wanted, they’re the DOCUMENT DUDES!
