Cool surfin' swinging classic rock

A Girl Like You is a great opening track. John wanted to do a swinging/surfin' number that would be an upbeat version of early guitar instrumentals he used to learn from The Ventures or The Pyramids - songs like Pipeline, Walk, Don't Run or Penetration. He sent me a demo singing scat where the lyrics would fit, but he originally used "a girl like you" in the refrain and I liked it. So, I just filled in the rest of the blanks. He told me back then it was easier to do a key change than write a Mid-8 break. Voila!

A Girl Like You
(refrain)
What am I gonna do with a girl like you?
You come in here and play it oh so cool.
No matter what I say,
I know you’ll make me pay.
What am I gonna do with a girl like you?
It’s never just okay, but I love you anyway.
What am I gonna do with a girl like you?
Friends say I’m a hopeless case –
they wonder why I’m blind.
Maybe I’m the crazy one
‘cause I want to make you mine.
Day will come, I’ll be the one,
that’s my whole design.
We’ll turn your cool into a shiny jewel
if you’re so inclined.
I sing these blues so you will choose,
to make my chestnuts chime.
If you walk right past me,
you’ll leave my love behind.
(refrain)
What am I gonna do?
What am I gonna do?
What can I do?
What am I gonna do?
