Under lock and key: Debut single “Unchain My Soul” from Sonic Keys
“Unchain My Soul” is the primary release for Brisbane’s freshest and soul singer songwriter, Sonic Keys.
Nick Pound (Sonic Keys) is an Australian-British singer songwriter based in Brisbane, Queensland. Nick
started singing and playing piano from the tender age of 7 and songwriting from 15 years. He has won
numerous local songwriting competitions in Brisbane, and has even sung in front of Danni Minogue,
Westlife’s very own Brian McFadden and roughly 2000 spectators on Australia’s Got Talent in 2012.
Sonic Keys’ debut single, “Unchain My Soul” is an inspired 90’s soul ballad layered with hidden musical
gems and vocal highs, leaning in Nick’s signature falsetto range. The track delivers a message of yearning
for freedom after the tragic loss of a family member. This song is steeped in emotion, taking the listener on
their own personal journey.
Music and lyrics written by Nick Pound, “Unchain My Soul” is his first official release and exploration into the
world of Soul, R’N’B and Contemporary pop. With an EP and second release on the horizon, Nick holds
nothing back to provide outstanding vocal performances every take, and piano-fuelled arrangements on his
heartfelt tracks.
“Unchain My Soul” is a personal account of Nick’s tumultuous last few years. After losing his Mum to cancer
in 2019, clashes between Nick and his Father intensified. Upon missing his wife, Nick’s Dad decided he
couldn’t bear a life without his soulmate, and left his sons and remaining family behind.
“It was late August 2022 only a few days after we got the news of my Dad ending his life, I was on a
songwriting blitz. I had so many words and emotional feelings to get out of me I was glued to my
piano for days. For the first time in my life I wasn’t holding back. I started writing “Unchain My Soul” when I
woke up one morning and just stuck with it for hours. I don’t even remember having a shower!”
