I was visiting my sister and her family in Malibu a few years ago, when my nephew Joey was 4 years old. As many kids do at that age -- at first he was shy, then after an hour or so, he was my best bud and I couldn't have got rid of him if I wanted! I was thinking about that -- how long does it take to go from shy to sure, and it hit me that that's a cool metaphor for a relationship, and voila....

You meet, you talk
You click, or not
It's easy, or it's hard
How can you know?
Where will it go?
It isn't in the cards.
Ah, sometimes you never make it
No one can say they know
How long it takes to get from shy to sure
Sometimes you never make it
No one can really know
How far it is to get from shy to sure
Ya been together for so long,
Ya think you'd know by know
Mis-starts, mistakes
Can't get a break
At least I don't know how.
Ah, sometimes you never make it
No one can say they know
How long it takes to get from shy to sure
Some times you never make it
No one can say they know
How far it is to get from shy to sure
You're on you're off
You're up then down
The cycle starts again
Now gettin' close
Now far apart
You wonder where he's been
Ah sometimes it takes a lifetime
Sometimes it takes a night
Sometimes it's just a wink
And you know you got it right
Sometimes you never make it
No one can say they know
How far it is to get from shy to sure
Sometimes you never make it
No one can say they know
How far it is to get from shy to sure!
