Well, the girls are on the stoops, watch the a cappella groups,
The kids are home, listening to Huey and the News,
When all the time, you know the lessons aren’t cheap,
But God, we got to be free,
I’m a music man, I find it where I can,
With approval of the loved ones, or adoring fans,
With the bosses who are bossy and the girls who are tan,

From the rush of the crowds, we play the music loud,
And the quartet on the corner, they’re just as proud,
Boom boxes on the sidewalks, radio on the beach,
But God, we got to be free,

The bands come and go, and the members always change,
No matter how you pound it, the beat stays the same,
