A song about change

The lyrics were inspired by the beautiful display of bluebells that appear at the Iron Age fort site in Hembury, Devon. Their beauty is transient, but wait a year, and what was lost comes back. We change; they don't

Autumn Girl
Words and music: Colin Bates and Brian Booth, copyright 2002/2012
An autumn sun pours molten gold upon the ground
This amber carpet made of leaves
Its liquid light surrounds and bathes me, softening sound
My senses now set to full 'receive'
Seasons change and we change with them
But seasons run in circles
And start anew each time
The sight of turning leaves wakes memories from their sleep
Then her face is here, so calm, so proud
This is a moment, just a moment, that I’d like to keep
But these moments are merely wisps of cloud
Seasons change and we change with them
But seasons run in circles
Indifferent to time
A gentle shower kisses earth, cleans my senses
Each raindrop on each leaf a jewel of light
And now I recognise no past, and no future tenses
The present wraps around me, holds me tight
Seasons change and we change with them
But seasons run in circles
No start or end in time...
... time to leave
To remember
Not to grieve
Yet memories have a strong and real persistence
Insistent in my autumn world
And I surrender, offer up no resistance
To be here with my autumn girl
Seasons change and we change with them
But seasons run in circles
Our lives run on lines
