How do four teenagers from the suburbs outside of Vancouver B.C, Canada, unite to create chaotic, mathematically charged, jazz infused hardcore? Simple…they meet as young blink 182 fans and get bored with their musical direction.
The four members of A Textbook Tragedy began creating music under the band name “Attention Zero” when they were all 16 years old. They wrote catchy, yet screamy, songs and developed a large, mostly high school fan base in their hometown. As the members began listening to more musically challenging music, they also began to write more complex songs. It wasn’t long before they had changed their name to “A Textbook Tragedy” and ditched their old catchy ways for a new genre crossing sound that drew upon a wide variety of sources such as Mr. Bungle, The Buddy Rich Big Band, the Dillinger Escape Plan, and Botch.
After playing countless successful local show, releasing one 8 song demo and participating in two Canadian dates on the 2004 Vans Warped Tour, the band decided to take their project to a more serious level. Local musician and hot shot indie producer Stuart McKillop joined forces with the band to record their debut full length. The band holed up in Burnaby B.C’s “Hive Studio” for the months of April and June of 2005 to create an 11 song album that connected from start to finish. The result was a musical assault that mixed metal, hardcore, jazz, and ambient rock together into one confusingly beautiful package. The band titled the album, “A Partial Dialogue between Ghost and Priest,” and released it to a sold out crowd at Vancouver’s “Mesa Luna” on July 28th, 2005. They followed up the successful release with an August, 2005, Western Canadian tour of which they found equal success, and developed large amount of new fans in each town they played in.
The live show has been described as “unbelievable” and even people who don’t like the bands unconventional music are attracted to their on stage lunacy. They encourage everyone who enjoys their recordings to see them live in order to experience and appreciate their music on another level.
All of the members are still 19 and under, and A Textbook Tragedy has no plans of slowing down in the near future. The band will be touring North America extensively throughout the next year. They have already opened for such National Touring acts as Misery Signals (ferret), Stutterfly (maverick), Bleed the Dream (warcon), Ion Dissonance (abacus), and The End (relapse), they also participated in the Vans Warped Tour in 2005.

“Do yourself a favour and introduce yourselves to A Textbook Tragedy before Hot Topic embarks on their search for a watered-down equivalent.”
