While most bands from Orange County, California built up a hardcore following though screamo-punk and emo-pop, Richard Bivens and Foreign Press have stayed loyal to their combination of indie and blues infused, left leaning, rock and roll.
As their name suggests, Bivens is the principle singer/songwriter, with Foreign Press helping to emphasize the depth and dynamics of the songs, which are written in the ""untrustworthy narrator"" style popularized by Randy Newman and the Rolling Stones. The protagonists in his songs range from delusional to deviant, as they discuss their travails in a way that somehow comes across as endearing. The music comes alive through an intense combination of determination and showmanship reminiscent of the band's rock and soul icons of yesteryear.
The band recorded a demo in October 2005 and quickly created a Myspace buzz amongst both the indie-rock and mainstream communites.
Their debut EP, ""Absolute Beginners"", scheduled for a May 9th release, was recorded in San Francisco at Lucky Cat Recording. The record was produced by Tony Leong (Bay Area concert promoter) and was mastered by JJ Golden (Spoon, Calexico, Black Heart Procession).
