Obsidian Oz’s The Dream:
A Surreal Sonic Experience
By: Jennifer Logue
What is Obsidian Oz exactly? Is it a hopping, new club spot? Is it GQ’s pic for freshest male fragrance of 2008? These are the questions I asked myself upon first hearing the name from one of my too-cool-for school hipster friends. Then I soon found out, Obsidian Oz is a new musical artist on the scene, and his music is quite fresh- so I wasn’t too far off.
I snagged a copy of his debut album, entitled, The Dream, and needless to say, it has provided me with a satisfying helping of stimulating music. Oz goes where no musicians, at least to my knowledge, have gone before, blending together rootsy Americana country blues with techno beats. Combined with Oz’s unique, haunting vocal style, the aptly titled album takes on a “dream- like” quality, transporting the listener beyond the physical, and into the world of the subconscious, of memories, of dreams. The overall effect can be likened to listening to a bunch of classic bluesy country rock albums, going to sleep, and then having the music do a little dance on your subconscious. The Dream is definitely worth a listen if you’re eager for new heights of musical pleasure.
