Urusen are Peter Beatty, Ben Please, Nick Ullmann, Jay Darwish and Kieran Houston.
Recently highlighted as 'British breakthrough talent' (Music Week) and 'one to watch' (Metro Newspaper), their
roots are firmly bedded in the longstanding musical partnership of cousins Peter and Ben, from Somerset. After
producing a debut LPof recordings as a duo, they were joined by Hungarian cellist Nick, London bassist Jay, and
Newcastle drummer Kieran, whilst producing new album One day in June.
One day in June began with home made roots, back in Somerset in 2005. After over two years of squeezing
musician friends into a tiny DIYstudio, recording onto a laptop, and transporting this set up to record in various
other locations, the album ended up at Peter Gabriel's Realworld Studios. On the merit of the (rather sizeable list
of) recordings, Realworld offered their help with the final track mixes and then top mastering engineer Jon Astley
(The Who, The Rolling Stones) also offered his support. By the time the album was finished in 2007 the band had
grown from two to five.
Warm guitars and distinct harmonies, accompanied by cello, bass (sometimes double) and drums, they shareduties
on piano, charango, harmonica, percussion, harmonium - a mounting array of instruments. Shifting from delicate
to epic, Urusen echo acoustic folk influences (think Elliot Smith or Kings of Convenience), occasional bluesy tinges
(Gomez or Tim Buckley) and rockier influences (they're fans of Radiohead). The end result is eclecticallyarranged,
occasionally unleashed, and importantly to them, genuine and earthy. With a focus on harmonies and lyrical content
they have drawn comparisons with Belle and Sebastian, Calexico, Badly Drawn Boy and Stephen Malkmus.
The album One day in June was released in August 2007 at the Spitz in London. Released through their own label
The Almighty Rooftop Record Company, the album has been receiving praise, as have their live performances,
and as their standing grows, they don't discount the possibility that the band may also continue to grow in size.
