The Subverts were the first punk band from the 90s Kirkland Lake punk scene to record and independently release an album. Violence and Revolution was recorded in 1993 in a small Kirkland Lake basement studio by Bob May. The members of the band were founding members of the Imperial Order of Low Budget. The IOLB was a school club at the, now demolished, local high school KLCVI that allowed the local scene to flourish as it would put on all ages shows featuring both local bands and bands from nearby towns using the school’s resources and use the money to record local bands. The Subverts released “ Violence and Revolution" independently in 1993. After several line up changes "Coup D'Etat" was recorded in 1994 but never released. Upon the band's dissolution several original Subverts members (Geoff, James, Shawn) would form The Exiles Club (https://youtu.be/pSCY0GjQe3Q) in Toronto. James (John Vulgar) would go on to form Inner City Four (https://youtu.be/9Uuf2OHVhL4) and, for a time, played bass for Toronto punk band Bitter Grin.
