I'm a solo musician who likes to play a lot of open mic nights and enjoy writing, recording, myself and with other local musicians in my home studio.

Press review: The Daily Item Sunbury, Pennsylvania. 7-08-2001

Sometimes the road of life will take us in many different directions. We get to where we want to go most of the time. But, there's always a chance that we'll end up having to take a detour somewhere down the line. This is true no matter who you are or what you do for a living. And sometimes, depending on the situation, that detour will keep us off the road that we wish to travel. For Sunbury musician Mike Higgins, his path was chosen for him, but, his determination has brought him back to the place where he wants to be. Higgins comes from a musical family, which is what sparked his interest in music, "My mother always had a piano in the house and my grandparents were musicians as well. My grandfather sang in Fireside Five, which was on WKOK back in the 50's and if my grandmother was still alive, she'd give Elton John a run for his money because she was really good." He continues, "I'd go to family reunions and I would listen to my aunts sing with my mother, they would do it without the music and it was just awesome." A few years later, while in his early teens, Higgins discovered the guitar. "I got into it because of Ralph Burkhart, who is now the guitar player for Sarcasm. He lived right Down the street from me. I had heard him play this one Journey song and I was really into Journey at that time and that just did it for me."After his parents bought him a guitar, Higgins set out to begin his career. "I got together with Kyle Gilbert, who was the drummer for Harpo for awhile. I started jamming with him and that's when I really started getting into the feel of the band scene. We called ourselves Midnight Metal, it was pretty cool." A short time later, Higgins went into his first "real" band, Loaded Dice, as their lead guitar player. The band slowly built a name for themselves in the local music scene and then, on June 16th, 1994, tragedy struck. "I was in a bad car accident and I broke my neck and the end result was an incomplete spinal chord injury," Higgins stated. "It left my fingers partially paralyzed, but, I didn't let that stop me from playing music." Higgins returned to Loaded Dice as their bass player. "The car accident impaired my fingers," he stated, "I couldn't perform on the guitar as well as I could on the bass. It was the ability, or lack of, that made me decide to switch." Loaded Dice continued to make their rounds in the local music scene. Eventually, the band went through some member changes and became Draganoid and Higgins went off to do his own thing. Higgins began writing and recording his own music in his digital studio and, through extensive use of the internet, he began sharing his music with the rest of the world under the name Soul Signal. He began working with area musicians and performers such as Renee Kitches, Bob Gandy and Balance vocalist Rick Rebuck and he began releasing his work under the banner of Higtone Productions, which is his "business" identity. While Higgins isn't a new name in the scene, his solo work, as well as his work with others, is still fairly new. But, through open mic nights at various establishments and the internet, he's starting to make a new name for himself and he hasn't let his disability slow him down. His reasons for continuing to move forward are simple, "I love making original music because that's where it's at. I guess musically, I try to be a perfectionist. I write about past experiences, stuff that I see around myself and, what it all boils down to is this, I just want to touch people with my music. I'd like to touch their soul." And for Mike Higgins, that's what it's all about.
