New York City Bassist and performer Michael Kelly has a secret love for writing classical music and is showing off some of his current work at IAC. His Current projects include "The BIG 50" IAC artist The Grip Weeds, Wide Right and NYC singer/songwriter Ronnie Gent, who is always charting near the top of the Soft Rock Charts or R&B sections here at IAC.
Originally from Buffalo N.Y. , Michael began playing the cello at age 8, soon moving on to his first love, the string bass and classical music. Graduating to the electric bass at age twelve, Michael worked his way through a myriad of jazz and rock bands in his teens until he settled in New York City when he was 21.
Michael holds a BA in Music Theory and Composition and a MA in Music Theory and Composition from the SUNY at Fredonia School of Music where he was the recipient of the Victoria Bohlen Memorial Award for excellence in composition. Kelly has been writing, recording and performing in New York City for several years and returned to Fredonia in 1994 to study composition with Dr. Donald Bohlen.
He currently lives in New York City with his wife Susan and son Max, and keeps up a busy performance schedule with vocalist Ronnie Gent, in the Ronnie Gent Band. He is also the current bassist for The Grip Weeds whom he joined the in the Summer of 2003, filling the suddenly vacated bass chair with just 4 weeks to learn all of their current material before hitting the road. Soon after returning from their successful European tour, the band asked him to contribute his musical as well as marketing talents to the new album Giant on the Beach, released last year and currently on the airwaves in the U.S. and Canada , Europe and Japan in addition to newly released video in North and South America .
Michael has also recently been asked by lead singer and childhood friend Leah Archibald to join her critically acclaimed indie band; Wide Right, as an ‘unofficial official member’ and beer drinking buddy of the band. He immediately accepted her gracious offer! Look for them on tour, stop by and have a beer.
