Old Enough to Kill a Man
In November 2007, I visited a number of locations where battles had been fought in WW1 at Ieper/Ypres (Flanders, Belgium). The image of the simple grave of a 15-year-old British soldier, Valentine Joe Strudwick, haunted me for months. I wrote the lyric to honour him and all "child" soldiers who have died anywhere and at any time in senseless wars.

Mommy and You
I'd read Cormac McCarthy's harrowing post-apocalyptic book 'The Road'. After seeing the movie, I felt compelled to write a lyric.

Run, Habibti, Now Run! (Instrumental)
INSTRUMENTAL track of a song regarding the tragic circumstances faced by the tens of thousands of Syrian asylum seekers pouring into European countries over the past several months. The ongoing and distressing news stories and photographs led to the writing of the lyric.
Though the current track is instrumental, I've included the text. I thought it might help listeners to know the story that the music is reflecting. A vocal track from a female singer is in the pipeline.
*The word 'habibti'

Sevastopol
A harrowing tale, but an authentic piece of - probably not widely known - history. After the Crimean War, and the siege of Sevastopol (1854-1855), the bones of thousands of British soldiers were gathered, ground to powder, and shipped back to England to be used as fertiliser. What a poignant chain of events.
(This practice, however, had stopped by the time of WWI.)

All of the Trees
A tender ballad about a lost love.
(The Danish words 'jeg elsker dig' in the bridge = 'I love you'. The 'dig' rhymes with 'sigh'. Though the singer is Swedish, and pronounced things a little differently.)

Welcome at the Shady Saviour
A couple of years ago, a title generator threw out the surreal 'Welcome at the Shady Saviour'. Immediately a noisy little pub/bar I often pass sprang to mind. The door is usually open, revealing the dark interior, the men, the women, the rituals.

Rag and Bone Man
In the UK - and no doubt other places - rag-and-bone men used to travel with a cart from village to village. They collected rags, bones, and other items that owners hoarded but really had no further use for. I liked the notion of some kind of symbolic character who scavenges in people's hearts, relieving them of haunting memories, of the pain associated with poor decisions they've made, or choices they've been afraid to make at all.

These are the best lyrics I've heard on this site in 10 years! It's so refreshing to see really literate and meaningful words used in this way. Thank you for keeping the art of language alive at a time when it seems the main goal is to abbreviate, not communicate. (OMG!)
