MY stumper questions for music geeks
1) This band had multiple hits in the 70s (and a couple in the 80s), but before the band formed, one of their primary songwriters wrote big hits in the 60s for such bands as The Yardbirds and The Hollies. Name the band and, if you can, the songwriter. Bonus points for naming any of his 60s hits for the other artists.
2) We all know that Elvis Costello had a big hit with "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding?" But he didn't write it. Who did and what was the name of the band that recorded the original version?
3) Name the early 70s cult band whose drummer went on to play for The Cars and keyboard player went on to help form Talking Heads.
4) The Violent Femmes were discovered busking on the street in Milwaukee by a guitar player for a famous band. What was the famous band and what was the guitar player's name?
5) In the late 70s and early 80s, Robert Fripp (King Crimson founder and guitar player) produced a trio of albums that he thought of as a triptych—a trilogy of sorts. But each album was credited to a different artist. Who are the three artists? (Hint: they were all solo albums.)

The first half is correct, Scott. Nick did write it, but his band at the time was not Rockpile.

Great questions. I am familiar with all the stories related, but would have to google cheat for the answers.

Yes. Richard got #2.
Nick Lowe wrote it, and recorded it with his band Brinsley Schwarz.
If you all want any clues, just ask.

Not that anybody has been paying attention (including me), but just so that I can put some closure on this thread, here are all the answers:
1) 10cc; Graham Gouldman… "Bus Stop" (The Hollies) and "For Your Love" (The Yardbirds)
2) (this one was answered correctly)
3) The Modern Lovers
4) James Honeyman Scott from The Pretenders
5) Robert Fripp (yeah, he did a solo album, himself), Peter Gabriel (his second solo album: "Scratch"), and Daryl Hall (yeah, for real)
