Writing on instruments that you don't actually play
Last night I was at a friend's (and bandmate's) house and, even though I don't know how the hell to play, I was plunking around on his piano. Came up with a couple of chord changes and riffs that I really liked. He liked them, too and I think that they might actually become the basis for a couple of new songs. Or, at least they hopefully will...
Any of you sit down with—or at—an instrument that you have no clue about? Did it inspire you?

teaching myself guitar, whoa , what a challenge, but got some things going on, and I think it is a good thing. fun instrument , but way harder then piano, for me anyways, I am and have been coming up with some different approaches for songs using the instrument even though it is pretty basic chords, more at enjoying the process

I am principally a guitar player and although I know a little about piano I certainly wouldnt call my self a keyboardist in any way.
But, I have found that using the piano to write guitar solos is a great way to come up with riffs that would otherwise never have thought off using the guitar. I guess the different approach takes me out of the locked in boxes that the guitar seems to impose on me, gets me away from my well known patterns and has me doing new things.

I am the opposite of Byron I play guitar/bass but not piano. Last week I was messing with a cheap keyboard I have in my closet. I was amazed even still worked. I came up with this cool pattern. I don't know If I will write a song with it or not since I am busy with my cover and a few other things right now but it was interesting. I never imagined coming up with anything from playing piano but it happened that day. It was a very strange experience.

I'm a "jack of all trades, but Master of none".
I play guitar best because that's my true instrumental love. I play bass fairly well. I play keys enough to get by (because of the chord progression poster on the wall). I can keep a beat with bongos/congas and even play a mean set of spoons, but I program my drums.
My father played mandolin and I got his when he passed away. I taught myself how to play mandolin just because of my dad. The damn thing is tuned upside down! Makes you really think....
First song I ever put down on tracks and here on IMP was SMILE. It features that same Mandolin, and my grandfathers 1934 Gibson L7 archtop. Family tribute I guess.
If you have the time, the knack, and the patience, one can learn just about any instrument. If I need a certain sound, I'll learn that piece on the actual instrument. Or I'll find someone that has mastered their instrument. MIDI seems kinda generic at times.

That is a nice story Duane and your work on mandolin was really good cheers.
Hope your dad is smiling down on you every time it plays.
