Just finished writing my first song in almost 2 years!
Yeah, it's been a long dry spell. When writer's block gets me, it gets me bad. Still needs some tweaks, lyrically (and maybe a couple of chord changes, too) but it's basically done.
Big sigh of relief.
Gonna talk to some of the guys and see if and when they are interested in getting into the studio to get the next tune on to the record.

It is now DEFINITELY done.
I don't think it's a single, but I do think that it'll be a pretty good album track.

Great - it's weird how one time you can be writing song after song then have a long dry period. I've written nothing much new for ages so content myself working on videos of old songs and playing drums and flute instead!!

Here's a demo video of the new song.
LYRICS:
1.
I put on my outside smile
As I step out the front door
And I’ll admit that it’s been harder
But I won’t say a whole lot more
If you felt the things I’m feeling
If you saw the things I saw
You would let me throw my cards out
Then let me draw, draw, draw, draw, draw
2.
I march gaily through the morning
And continue through the day
And I’ll answer all your questions
But I won’t have too much to say
If you felt the things I’m feeling
They’re things you’d never want to know
But please don’t read too much in to it
Just let it go, go, go, go, go
3.
These things I carry on my shoulders
They fit underneath my shirt
They say it will make me stronger
But they don’t say how much it hurts
If you felt the things I’m feeling
You just might never want to feel
If you lived the life I’m living
It’d make you reel, reel, reel, reel, reel
If you knew the things I’m knowing
They’re things you’d never want to know
But please don’t read too much in to it
Just let it go, go, go, go, go
Let it go…

I have not watched the video yet but I will. Reading the lyrics only these really stood out and I thought these lines were pretty powerful...
...
If you felt the things I’m feeling
They’re things you’d never want to know
But please don’t read too much in to it
Just let it go
...
These things I carry on my shoulders
They fit underneath my shirt
They say it will make me stronger
But they don’t say how much it hurts
...
If you felt the things I’m feeling
You just might never want to feel
If you lived the life I’m living
It’d make you reel
...
If you knew the things I’m knowing
They’re things you’d never want to know
But please don’t read too much in to it
Just let it go
...
I can just feel the longing and loneliness pour out in your words. It makes me even more excited to watch the video and hear it.

I watched the video I like the cool raw quality of it and the general arrangement.
I'm excited to hear how it pans out with a group.

Thanks so much, Ken!
I've actually tweaked a couple of lines in the lyrics and think that they're better now.
Really appreciate you checking it out and your comments.
I'm investigating a couple of options for arrangement and will talk to the guys that I usually play with and see if they're up for trying to record sometime soon.

And now... I just wrote my SECOND song in as many weeks!!!
"This Ain't No Race"
Well I’ve been tied up
Now I’m tied down
And I’m tangled up in knots
But you know, it ain’t the worst place I could be
‘Cause I’ve been busted up
And broken down
And lost everything I’d got
But now I’ve got someone to share their debt with me
Well, I owe a lot
She owes a lot
And we’re never catching up
But I’ve never felt the need to save my face
We know we can’t keep up
To what we’ve never caught
And, besides it’s way too late
But now we’re old enough to know this ain’t no race
(bridge)
The Jones’ were born with spoons in their mouths
And they could pay for their head starts
And their daddies all put rockets on their backs
But we could barely pay for the entry fee
So when the gun went off
We were left behind—at the back of the pack…
3.
And now we can’t keep up
To what we’ve never caught
And, besides it’s way too late
But now we’re old enough to know this ain’t no race

Very good song. I identified, heavily, with this song. More'n I wanna say, really.
Said enough as it is.
Well I'm glad to see the gears again turn for you, might wanna keep
doing it while the water's flowin'.
I gather you have a band, you mention having your own boys on hand,
that's helpful, they're helpful to have around, boys are.
I look forward to hearing what you and your boys cook up for this song.
If for any reason they are not available, I'll be happy to talk to my good boys
about helping you out with some tracks.
I'm also a Muse, so anyone who has writer's block should
write to me:
American_Lesley_Jane@yahoo.com
and I'll see if I can't get you unblocked or help somehow....
it helps that my 'house band' as it were is BEATLESEX.
Sort of makes me the bloody King. Great Work, Pop. Hop On. ~L

Thanks Lesley and Ken!
I appreciate your checking it out and your comments, L. Yeah, I wish that I wasn't able to write that one so easily. Nor the first one for that matter. But I'm glad that I can. (If that makes sense.)
Ken... I'm looking forward to hearing what you think when you do get around to giving it a spin.

Writing from experience and about life is not a bad thing Todd. In fact a lot of great songs are written this way. Sometimes writing a song about it helps the healing and sometimes it just kicks you in the head until you can get it on tape.
Anyway I think its great that you are recording your ideas this way so that they are not lost and also gives you a way to look back on it as the song develops and you can see how far its come.
Keep on writing them and filming them and we'll keep watching.

Ken

Let us know when you make the full produced records of them...
and if you need help with that, talk to me about it. Great work, Pop.

Oh Ken, it IS good for writing, it's just not so good for living.
And, I need to get the guys together to see how the arrangement is gonna go. I'm thinking a fiddle solo at the end of "This Ain't No Race" (the second one) would be nice -- solo through the outro. Kinda like Jimi did with his guitar solo in "Little Wing" -- fade on it.
And some pedal steel on the first one.
We'll see if maybe an upright bass might go well on one of them, if Steve can hack it. If he can't, maybe engineer John can.
I have ideas brewing. I'm becoming a better producer with each successive song, I think. And I'm getting excited about getting back to the studio with these.

Well yes and no Todd while your going through hell its not so great but then once you come out the other side and look back at it you kind of sign in relief and say whoa well we made it.
Anyhow it does make good song writing and life experience so I'll stop by again after I can give it a spin.

Well I don't generally repeat myself but some things bare repeating
"I watched the video I like the cool raw quality of it."
...
Now I'll say something new. ...
....
wait for it
....
OK enough buffering. Todd I must say that I like this one better than the last one but I did like the last one if that makes any sense. In fact I think the riff you created on this second one is quite catchy and I really like it.
This second one though has a special quality I can't quit put my finger on it but its "peppy" if you like the term. It moves right a long and doesn't miss a beat.
For this one I would not change the arrangement at all I like it how it is.
I think you got something there Todd and I much look forward to the final version.

Ken

Thank you so much, Ken!
And I do think that it would work okay as a solo guitar/voice arrangement, too. However, I just have this arrangement kinda bouncing around for it; or, at least the fiddle part.
I'm hoping to get my son to play the fiddle, as he's getting to be a pretty good violin player, but he's hesitant to write his own part, and I don't really "write" the way a classically trained musician like him would want me to. So, it might have to be somebody else playing it, if I can find someone. (Maybe his former teacher?)
I really appreciate your thoughtful commentary, though. And I cannot wait to get these two done and presented to you all in their final form.

So, I (finally) have a recording date for these 2 songs. It was gonna be 9 months ago or so, but one of the band members had a personal issue pop up and we had to delay.
Now, the date is set and we are going in to the studio on Sept. 24th. (A month from today, now that I look at the calendar!)
Should have them ready for public consumption by late October, at the latest, depending upon how mixing goes. Should be quicker, I hope.
Anyway, I'm excited to share these with you and hope that they live up to what you think they will.
