The hardest song to sing?
I just went in to record some vocals the other day for a song of mine "I'm Pathetic" that is almost too hard for me to sing.
Now, I am not a great singer by any stretch, but I think I did myself in on this one; it covers more than 2 full octaves. I pieced together a take that is almost acceptable, but I have to figure out a better approach to get a really good one.
I've tried approaching other friends of mine to take the vocal, but so far it's to no avail.
This is a song that I have given up singing live.
Can't wait to post it, though... once it's all been done to my satisfaction.
And, since I know that this thread is going to soon become rife with links to other songs, I might as well start out with the one that was the hardest for me to sing untl now:
"Suckers"
I don't sing that one live anymore, either.

damn songs... writing themselves out of our vocal range... hmf.
one thing that might help, is to tone with the extreme notes. don't force, but start off in falsetto softly, then very slowly strengthen the push of the note. i've been starting to do a range of exercises and working with the indian tamboura. if I work consistently at these exercises and on difficult notes, i've been amazed at what i could do. its definitely no fun to write a song you can't sing. blah.
can't wait to hear the new stuff though... we're back in record mode too, its super exciting.
peace,
A

That's pretty good advice. The thing is, that the song and the melody requires a certain type of vocal delivery that does not lend itself to this technique.
I may try to tap another friend of mine to see if he'd be willing to do the lead vocal.
And good luck with your recording, too!
Maybe a StL - Chicago show exchange might happen, if we release around the same time?

Wow Todd! I like the song Suckers alot. A "pop" jem my friend. I thought your vocals were also very good. I thought when you said it's a hard song to sing, it was going to be all wordy and fast talking. But no, very punk pop melodic.

back again... I also meant to say, I too, really dug "Suckers"... and I get that the screaming at the end could strain the voice. Good luck on finding the right singer.
EDIT: Oh yeah... we may head up your way next weekend with the kiddos... all depends on weather, so we won't know for sure until mid-week. Got family in Milwaukee and Chicago.
You have anything goin on?

Thanks for the props on "Suckers". It's the high "na-nas" that get me on that one. But this new song is all over hard. (Just listened back to my vox last night, and I think that I need to completely re-do them!)
I got nothing going on next week... oh, except for recording!
If you have the time, have an idea as to what you might add, and are interested in stopping by, maybe you could add a vocal or something to "Come On, Let's Go".
It's a really basic, bare-bones recording with just vocals, acoustic guitar, and viola. So, if you think you'll have the time to swing by for an hour or so, I can send along a copy of what we have so far, and you can let me know if you think that you'd want to/be able to add something.
EDIT:
I'm trying to tap a friend of mine who has a really good voice to sing the song that inspired this thread. Here's hoping that he'll do it.
