Discovering your favorite albums in a record store. Ever happen to you?
One of the things about the demise of the local, indie record stores that really sucks the most is the loss of the thrill: of walking in the door and hearing something new and exciting. Buying it. And taking it home, only to have it become one of your all-time favorites. What are the albums that you discovered like that? And where did you discover them (if you can remember)?
Guided By Voices - Alien Lanes (at Blackout Records, on Southport in Chicago)
Neutral Milk Hotel - On Avery Island (also at Blackout)
Eels - Electro-Shock Blues (Laurie's Planet of Sound on Lincoln Ave. in Chicago)
I'll try to think of more, too. But these are the ones that leap to top of mind.
I really miss Blackout!
IAC is kind of like a virtual version of that, but it's still a little different... less romantic.
Still, the closest you're gonna get these days.

yeah some of the best memories of my life were buying albums at record stores..
I first heard Neil Young's On the Beach in college, a friend turned me on to some of Neil's obscure stuff. Bought the record, played it every night practically, for years. (side 2 that is) Wore it out totally, wanted another copy but by then they were taken out of print by Neil. I was thrilled when the new remastered version came out.
I still remember this record store in Gettysburg PA where I bought a lot of my first 45s, would look at the charts on the wall, they always had some new song playing in the store and I often bought it.
My favorite place in the world at the time I remember best in my youth was Korvette's dept store, albums were cheaper there than anywhere else. I remember practically always buying whatever was new there, Elton John, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, the Stones, Steely Dan, seems I was rarely disappointed. Every week there were new records I'd now consider to be classic. Artists I loved put out 2 records a year then !
I also remember the downtown area of York PA, going to Woolworths, McCrory's and Murphy's, all 5 and dimes that had cutouts, would get 45s 3 for a dollar, always walked that circuit and found lots of gems.
