Is 16 Songs Too Many?
Hi All,
I am not sure what is copacetic for the amount of songs on an album. I have 16 songs that all tie into the Open Season concept I have been working on since March 2020. I do think there are some topics in the stimulus - response - result patterns prevalent I have not broached in the songs I have written so far.. . . do I continue with the shady side? Maybe, I will just forget I ever learned a note, sang a note, recorded a note , or juxtaposed a note into proper quantization, . . hmmm, guess it is best not to think about it. . ..

I have seen as many as 35 songs on an album but they were all little Carribean ditties with rap verses by an artist named Shaba Ranks. 16 songs is a bargain if they are all really good songs. Think quality over quantity. As artists we tend to think that everything we do is good. This is where managers and A&R people earn their keep. The reality is that some things we do are better than others. So, if you are going to do 16 songs make sure they are your 16 very best songs. I bought a CD by Bruno Mars once that only had 9 songs on it. But the thing was that all 9 songs were hits. That made the cd valuable even though there were not as many songs as I am accustomed to getting in an album. So, how do you get unbiased opinions of the songs? Well, I have this handy email list of fans who have followed my work for many, many years. I send out song surveys with songs for them to review and give me honest feedback. Interesting thing about this is that once I send out surveys they know a new CD is about to be released and I start getting advanced orders for it. My fans feel like they are getting special privileges by getting a first listen to my new stuff. I know email lists and fan lists are old school marketing techniques. But hey, if it works, use it. If not, try something else. But 16 songs is not too many especially if they are all radio worthy. Make it happen! Blessings & Respect, Stoneman

Thank you for your help. Open Season is the name of an album I recently completed using other people's music. There's just too many obstacles to overcome using my own music. The first eight songs on my page are a part of Open Season. . .
I have loved being on this site since 2008. I've listened to so many of your songs and have voted for you during the GKs. I am on this site because I am an Indie Music Person who has also been nominated for a GK.
Music tells stories I can hear and write. How does that stack up to reality? Is it good, ugly, and/or bad? Different, for sure. . . people tell me that all the time. . .is the real scorecard an analytics report from iTunes? Maybe so, but the worth of palladium in my eyes is the simple comment - thank you for writing this song.
Musician - I am not a musician but I do understand the math of music and can use relationships between notes to make melody. Four year old children on YouTube play piano far better than me. I can play notes.
Singer - I am not a singer, yet even fog horns have purpose and intensity to convey meaning. Since I am able to make neighbor's dogs howl, I believe they get it. I can whistle.
Songwriter - Yeah, I scribble poetry on paper and have ever since I learned the rhythm of Word, meter. Higher Order Language could be Lower Chaos Speech filled with unoriginal cliches to capitalize on the vernacular. As a conduit, I simply share what is given, wholesome original music to be enjoyed by anyone for a lifetime..

There are many "Top Line" writers out there that cannot play an instrument or sing. But, they have that uncanny ability to concoct the perfect vocal chorus or verse line for the perfect piece of music. That has always been a respected profession. A lot of the Motown greats were that kind of writer. You have much to be proud of.
